It’s one of those head-scratching things. Previews for horror movies in October for movies not arriving until around Valentine’s Day. And it happens every year. Valentine’s Day is a big time for horror, and two movies heading your way next year look like you’ll want to see them if not in the theater at least streaming once they arrive on home video. Also, this weekend is DC Fandome, an online streaming event like Disney’s annual D23 fan event (which arrives next month). If you’ve wondered where DC Comics movies have been, they’ve evidently been waiting for next year–even before the pandemic they’ve been lagging behind the Marvel movies. DC rolled out several teasers this weekend, many highlighting concept art as they make their way to their final stages of production. Each of the new movies has promise, and you’ll want to compare them to our single Marvel preview below.
Below check out trailers for two 2022 horror movies, a Marvel series coming soon, and five movies starring characters from the pages of DC Comics, beginning next year.
We’re heading into Halloween, so let’s start with this really moody and creepy film coming out in the second most frequent month for launching horror movies, February. It’s Blumhouse’s The Black Phone from Universal Pictures, a ghost story about a child kidnapping with a ghostly twist, starring Ethan Hawke in a very different role for one of the greatest actors of his generation. In its mainstream horror, the Blumhouse studio seems to have dialed back its gore since its Fantasy Island, Get Out, Halloween, and Happy Death Day era began–this next film looks like it may be something more accessible for mainstream audiences than Final Destination, but more in the vibe of the original Scream. A new scary masked villain arrives as The Black Phone hits theaters February 4, 2022.
And speaking of Scream, castmembers from the original 1996 movie (27 years ago!), Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, and David Arquette, are returning for a sequel following the Halloween (and Shaft, etc.) naming trend and simply calling the sequel by the original title, Scream. It looks to have a similar plot as the current run of Halloween movies, with original victims returning to take a stand. Check out this trailer with the return of the scary masked stalker:

The second trailer for the Hawkeye series will make you stop and think we may be gearing up for Hailee Steinfeld’s Kate Bishop as the best of the live action superheroines. Check out the return of Jeremy Renner in this trailer for the six-part series Hawkeye:

With the DC Fandome streaming this weekend, dealing out several trailers is the big event. The most interesting is the expansion of those DC Comics superheroes with powers from the Gods. Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu look great as the next villains. Here’s a fun look behind the scenes of the sequel to our current favorite DC Comics movie, Shazam!–Fury of the Gods:
We’re going to be waiting too long for this one. Shazam! Fury of the Gods doesn’t land until 2023. Argh!

Definitely still in production, look for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom in theaters December 16, 2022.
The biggest DC movie coming, and longest in the pipeline, is the premiere of Dwayne Johnson as Black Adam, Aldis Hodge as Hawkman, and Pierce Brosnan as Doctor Fate. Here’s a teaser for Black Adam:
No solid date yet for its release, but look for Black Adam next year.
If you watch Stargirl and saw John Wesley Shipp return again as The Flash, you’re probably wondering why he doesn’t star in the movie version. In this brief preview Ezra Miller looks like he’d rather be anywhere than making this movie. Oh, well, maybe knowing we’ll get a cameo from Michael Keaton as Batman will be worth catching the first movie of The Flash. Sorry, Keaton is not in this teaser:
It’s been in the works for quite a while, but look for it next year.
And speaking of Batmans, finally, a very different looking Batman movie is coming your way in The Batman:
Starring Robert Pattinson, The Batman arrives in theaters March 4, 2022.
